EmpowerU is a nonprofit educational and empowerment platform that combines impact-based learning, community-based learning with expertly crafted & delivered curriculum for those on the margins of society so they can envision a better future and be empowered to create it.
By combining technology, community, and award-winning educators, we have created a unique impact-based pedagogy that sets this program apart from others. Additionally, our affiliation with The University of Hong Kong gives us access to world-class educational resources & networks that further make our program unique.
We offer two main programs:
A two-year-long curriculum for migrant domestic workers that results in a certificate of completion from EmpowerU
A year-round education program--called PowerThru--for local ethnic minority Hong Kong secondary students that provides after school and summer school courses

To complete the entire EmpowerU migrant domestic worker program and receive a certificate of completion, students attend classes for four terms. Each term is roughly six months long and every year terms go from January-June and September-December.
We will also offer one-off courses that will provide targeted training in select areas and students who successfully complete these one-off courses will be granted a certificate of completion for each course.
The PowerThru program offers extra curricular activity courses for Hong Kong secondary school students throughout the school year and over summer break.
We offer both online and in-person classes and all of our programs offer a mix of both.
You don't have to complete all the classes unless you want a graduation certificate.
Our classes are conducted by experienced educators - university professors, industry professionals and certified subject matter experts to ensure the highest standard of learning.
Migrant Domestic Worker classes are provided online and in-person each term and provide a mix of seminar / lecture-based and hands-on interactive learning. Some are outdoors and some conducted virtually.
Ethnically diverse Hong Konger classes are provided online and in-person (on secondary school campuses and at HKU) each term.
We offer online classes that can be taken in the students’ own free time. In-person classes are offered on Sundays for migrant domestic workers and after school for secondary school students.
Currently, there is no limit on the number of students who are enrolled each semester for the migrant domestic workers program. Class sizes are usually capped at 25 students for the PowerThru program.
Our migrant domestic worker program is open to all domestic workers in Hong Kong and we welcome students from all walks of life to join in. There is no prerequisite to join.
Our PowerThru program is open to ethnic minority secondary school students in Hong Kong regardless of academic achievement.
Our program empowering migrant domestic workers is affordably priced at HKD 500/ term (four terms required to graduate and receive a certificate of completion for the entire EmpowerU program).
The PowerThru program is currently free of charge.
This course consists of a mix of skills training, general knowledge, and certificate-granting courses. Students who complete two years of course work will get a certificate of completion by EmpowerU.
Secondary school students who successfully complete each course will receive a certificate of completion by EmpowerU.
